In the eighth grade, I became fascinated by the images portrayed in a poem by the early tenth-century Persian poet, Rudaki, depicting the forms that a fire achieves: ‘It seeks heights, inverting feet into heads, cascading, tumbling, doubling into an infernal ring.’ The ring was one of the forms that burned itself into my imagination.
