Layli by Nader G. Vakili

Layli

1963
Mora (tropical Mulberry)
Approximately 70"H x 35" diameter. Weight: ~200lbs

Recollecting poems by the twelfth-century Persian poet, Nezami, describing the love between Layli and Majnoon. This statue was carved while the wood was still green, for fear of its being too dense to carve once dried, and to avoid its cracking. As it dried, the neck twisted, causing the face to look further backwards.
